There are a total of 87 counties in the state of Minnesota. Among them, Benton County is the oldest one (established in 1849) while Lake of the Woods County is the youngest (established in 1923). With population of 1,152,425, Hennepin County is the most populated. The biggest county by land area is Saint Louis County (16,123 km2) and the smallest is Ramsey County (403 km2).
